There has been recent publicity about breast implants and lymphoma called ALCL. Women with implants have an increased risk of developing ALCL in fluid around the implant, and in the capsule layer that naturally forms outside the implant.

I have been advising patients about the ALCL issue for several years. I provide this information as a handout to all patients having breast augmentation, or reconstruction with implants after cancer. This downloadable PDF is my latest update. I decided to make it accessible on my website so that all patients past and present can read it.

The key points are :

  • Surgeons do not recommend preventive breast implant removal in patients without symptoms.
  • Any woman with breast implants who experiences any sudden changes in a breast e.g. swelling or lumps, should see their surgeon for review.
