Excess skin and/or fat can be removed from the upper and lower eyelids to improve appearance. Sometimes the upper lid skin fold is large enough to affect vision and reduction surgery is recommended by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

The surgery involves making incisions in the fold of the upper eyelid, and just below the lashes on the lower lid. Excess skin is removed, and excess fat that causes the puffiness behind the skin.

Upper lid surgery can be done under local anaesthetic and takes about 1 hour. Lower lid surgery is usually done under general anaesthetic as it is a more complex operation. Eyelid surgery is often done with facelift surgery.

Eyelid surgery can be done as a Day Case. It is important to have a few quiet days after the surgery to avoid setting off bleeding. Returning to work depends on how "normal" you want to look. Bruising always takes 1 - 2 weeks to fade enough to be covered with makeup.
